Nothing is more frustrating than the picture freezing just as the ball hits the net. The good news is that most IPTV buffering is caused by something at home, not the service, and it can usually be fixed in a few minutes. Work through these ten fixes in order. Most people are sorted by fix number four.
Why does IPTV buffer?
IPTV streams video over your internet connection in real time. Buffering happens when your device cannot receive the video as fast as it plays. That can be caused by:
- a slow or unstable internet connection;
- weak Wi-Fi between the router and the TV;
- other devices using your bandwidth at the same time;
- a device that is short of memory or storage;
- your internet provider slowing down video traffic;
- busy servers on the provider’s side, especially during big events.
1. Restart your device and router
It sounds obvious, but it fixes more problems than anything else. Turn off your TV or streaming stick and unplug your router for 30 seconds. Plug the router back in, wait until the lights are steady, then turn the TV back on.
2. Test your internet speed
Run a speed test on the device you watch on, not on your phone. As a guide:
- HD: at least 15 Mbps
- 4K: at least 25 Mbps
If the result is much lower than your broadband package promises, the problem is your connection. Our guide to the best internet speed for IPTV explains what to look for.
3. Use an Ethernet cable
Wi-Fi is the most common cause of IPTV buffering. Walls, floors, microwaves and neighbours’ networks all get in the way. A wired Ethernet connection from the router to your TV or box is the single biggest upgrade you can make. Fire TV Sticks can use an inexpensive Ethernet adapter.
4. Move to 5 GHz Wi-Fi (or improve your signal)
If a cable is not possible, connect to your router’s 5 GHz network rather than 2.4 GHz. It is faster and less crowded. If your TV is far from the router, a mesh Wi-Fi system or powerline adapter can make a huge difference.
5. Stop other devices using bandwidth
Game downloads, cloud backups, video calls and other streams all compete for the same connection. Pause big downloads during the match, especially on slower broadband.
6. Clear the IPTV app cache
On Fire TV and Android TV, go to Settings → Applications → Manage installed applications, choose your IPTV app and select Clear cache. Do not choose “Clear data” unless you are happy to add your login again.
7. Free up memory and storage
Streaming sticks have limited memory. Uninstall apps you no longer use and restart the device once a week to keep it running smoothly.
8. Update your app and device
Install the latest version of your IPTV player app and the latest system update for your TV or stick. Updates often include playback fixes.
9. Switch off other VPNs
Telemo includes a built-in VPN and anti-block protection, so you do not need another one. A second VPN running on your device or router slows your connection down and can cause conflicts.
10. Try a different stream or app
If one channel buffers but others play fine, try its HD or backup version. If everything buffers in one app, try another player app to rule out the app itself. Our guide to the best IPTV apps has the options for each device.
